Back through your own front door.

Locked out on Rice Lane at two in the morning, or a lock snapped on County Road. We open the door without damage first, tell you the fixed price before we set off, and fit anti-snap locks your insurer will accept.

Shear line Spring Driver pin Key pin

Non-destructive entry, step by step

  1. 01 Light tension on the plug A tension wrench in the bottom of the keyway, turning it the way the key would. Gently.
  2. 02 Each pin lifted to the shear line One at a time, until the gap between the two halves of each stack sits on the join and holds there.
  3. 03 Five set. The plug turns. With nothing crossing the join the plug turns like it would with your key, and the door opens.
  4. 04 Open, and nothing broken. Same lock, same keys, no new cylinder to pay for. Most of our lockouts end this way.

Locked out

The drill is the last tool out of the bag, not the first.

A locksmith who drills every lock sells you a cylinder every time. We start with the ways in that leave your lock as it was: picking, a letterbox tool on a lever handle that was pulled shut but never locked, or slipping a latch. Only if a good lock beats us do we drill it, and you hear the price of the new cylinder first.

  1. You ringWe ask three things: the address, the door, and what is on the lock. You get a fixed price and a time.
  2. We text when we set offWith the van’s registration and the name of the locksmith, so you know who is walking up the path.
  3. The door is openedNon-destructively, nine times in ten. Then we ask for proof you live there.
  4. You pay what you were toldCard, Apple Pay or cash, and a receipt by email.

If a drill comes out, you will already know the price of the cylinder that goes in.

Read your cylinder

Is your lock the one your insurer asked for?

Open the door and look at the lock from the edge and the face. The standards are stamped into the metal. Two questions, and you will know whether to ring us.

1What kind of front door?

A guide, not your insurer’s word. The security section of your policy is what counts.

Lock snapping

Ten seconds and a pair of grips.

A standard euro cylinder is thinnest in the middle, where the cam that throws the lock sits. Snap it there and the lock turns with a screwdriver. A 3-star cylinder has a sacrificial section at the front that breaks off first and leaves the cam where nobody can reach it.

Standard cylinder The break runs through the middle and the cam is exposed. The door is open.
TS007 3-star The front breaks off at the sacrificial line. The cam stays behind it, locked.

£95 fitted, booked in daytime. The same as we charge for a like-for-like, so there is no reason to put the old kind back.

From Rice Lane

We know the doors round here.

Keyline started in a back bedroom off Walton Vale in 2009 and still works out of Rice Lane, ten minutes from most of the north end. Most of what we open, change and mend is on streets like these.

The terraces
Two-up two-downs off County Road, Goodison Road and Breeze Hill, most of them with a uPVC front door fitted between 1995 and 2010 and a cylinder that has never been changed.
The cylinders
The standard euro cylinders those doors came with are the ones lock snapping was invented for. A pair of grips and ten seconds. We swap them for 3-star at the same price as a like-for-like.
The rented houses
A large share of north Liverpool is privately let. We change locks between tenants for landlords and agents across L4, L5, L6 and L20, and keep a key log per address.
Match days
Around Anfield on match days Walton Breck Road and Priory Road close. We know the back ways, and the van tells you if it will be later than the time we gave you.

Landlords and agents

New tenant, new locks, same afternoon.

Tell us the address and the move-in date. We change the cylinders between tenants, label and log the keys, photograph the new locks and send one invoice per property. If the house is in one of the city’s selective licensing areas, the photos are what you show the council.

  • £85 the first door, £60 each extra on the visit

uPVC doors and windows

Lift the handle. If it fights you, ring us.

A uPVC door that needs a shoulder to lock is a door a few weeks from not locking at all. Usually the door has dropped on its hinges, and twenty minutes with an Allen key puts it right for £65. If the gearbox behind the handle has gone, we carry the common ones in the van and fit it the same visit.

  • Handle has to be forced upDoor dropped, keeps catching. Adjustment, £65.
  • Handle floppy, nothing happensGearbox gone. £165 fitted.
  • Key turns all the way roundCylinder or cam failed. £95 for a 3-star.
  • Window will not lockHandle or keep worn. From £45.

Locked myself out after a night out with my phone at 4%. The lad on the phone told me the price before he set off, he was there in 20 minutes and had the door open in five without a mark on it. £129 like he said.

Questions

What people ask on the phone at midnight.

Anything else, ring Lisa in the daytime on 0151 496 0742.

A wall of key blanks hung in rows, brass, nickel and coloured
Will you really open my door without breaking anything?

Most of the time, yes. Picking, a letterbox tool on a lever handle that was not locked, or slipping a latch open all leave the lock as it was. If the lock is a good anti-snap one and we cannot open it non-destructively, we tell you the price of drilling it and fitting a new 3-star cylinder before we touch it.

How do you know it is my house?

We ask for proof that you live there once the door is open: a driving licence, a bank card with the address on a letter, a tenancy agreement. If we cannot see any, we will not leave the door open for you. It is the same rule every MLA locksmith works to, and it protects you as much as anyone.

Is the price on the phone really the price?

Yes. The call-out is fixed by the time we arrive, not the time you ring, and it covers the travel, the first half hour and opening the door. Parts, if you need any, are priced on this page and we say them out loud before we fit anything.

What is lock snapping, and is my door at risk?

Snapping is breaking a standard euro cylinder in half at its weak middle with a tool from any garage, then turning the lock with a screwdriver. It is the most common way into a uPVC door in the UK. If your cylinder has no Kitemark and stars on its face, assume it can be snapped. Use the checker on this page, or send us a photo.

Do I need a BS3621 lock for my insurance?

Many home policies ask for a BS3621 lock on final exit doors in timber, and some ask for TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond cylinders on uPVC. Read the security section of your policy: if it names a standard and your lock does not carry it, a claim can be reduced or refused. We fit to whatever the policy says and leave you the paperwork.

Can you change the locks if my landlord will not?

Talk to your landlord or agent first: most tenancy agreements say you need permission, and you will have to give them a key. If it is urgent, after a break-in for example, we can change the cylinder and keep the old one for you to return.

Do you do cars or safes?

No. We are a domestic and small-business locksmith: doors, windows, garages and gates. For a car, an auto locksmith or your breakdown cover will do it properly.

Is a match day going to slow you down?

Around Anfield and Goodison it can, by ten or fifteen minutes. We give you an honest time on the phone and text if it changes.
