Kendal's slate rooftops and the town hall clock tower under a storm sky, the fells beyond

Slaters and roofers · Kendal and the South Lakes · since 1994

Rain on the roof. Not through it.

A Kendal family firm of slaters. Westmorland and Burlington slate, leadwork, chimneys and flat roofs, with a written fixed quote that already has the scaffold in it.

Since 1994, from a yard in Kendal

Slated by hand, eaves to ridge.

Most of our roofs are Lakeland stone houses under Westmorland green or Burlington blue-grey slate, laid the old way in diminishing courses: the big, heavy slates at the eaves and smaller ones every row up to the ridge. It is slow work. Done properly it lasts a hundred years, and we would rather do it once.

A slate quarry face high in the fells, mountains layered behind

Our slate

Slate from up the road, not halfway round the world.

New Westmorland green and Burlington blue-grey from Cumbrian quarries, and a yard of reclaimed Lakeland slate for repairs that have to match. Imported slate is cheaper and sometimes right. On a stone house in the Park, it usually is not.

What is under your slates

Six layers. We do every one of them.

  1. 01

    Rafters

The timber frame. While the roof is open we check every rafter for rot and woodworm, and strengthen or replace the tired ones before anything goes on top.

  2. 02

    Breathable membrane

A vapour-permeable underlay in place of old bitumen felt, so the loft breathes instead of dripping with condensation. Lapped 150 mm and taped at the eaves.

  3. 03

    Battens

Graded, treated battens set to the gauge of your slates. On a diminishing-course roof every row is measured on the roof, not read off a chart.

  4. 04

    Slates

Laid in diminishing courses from eaves to ridge and nailed twice with copper. The biggest slates go lowest, where the water runs heaviest.

  5. 05

    Lead flashing

Code 4 and 5 lead wherever the roof meets a chimney or a wall, dressed, wedged and sealed. Most leaks start here, so this is where we take our time.

  6. 06

    Ridge

Ridge tiles bedded in lime mortar, or a dry-fix ridge where the National Park allows it. Nothing to blow off, nothing to wash out.

Drone roof surveys

See your own roof before you spend a penny.

Most roofs can be checked without a ladder. We fly a drone over yours and send a photo report the same day: every slipped slate circled, every ridge and flashing checked. If all it needs is six slates, six slates is what we quote for.

  • Licensed operator, insured to fly near homes
  • Dated photos your insurer will accept
  • Twenty minutes on site, nobody on your roof

£95, taken off the bill if we do the work.

Two slates came off in the January gales and they were up a ladder by ten the next morning. Tarp on, slates back the following week, and they texted photos of the finished job because I was at work.

We had three quotes for our end terrace. Fellside’s was the only one that itemised the scaffold and the reclaimed slate, and it was what we paid, to the pound.

They rebuilt our round chimney exactly as it was, same stone, same lime, and dealt with the National Park officer so we didn’t have to.

The drone report showed the problem was the flashing, not the slates. Another firm had quoted us for a new roof. That report saved us thousands.

Tidy and polite, and they swept the drive every evening. Our rubber garage roof has been through two winters without a drop.

Proper slaters who know diminishing courses and lime. I’d send anyone with an old stone building their way.

Building Regulations, sorted.

Re-roofing more than a quarter of a roof falls under Building Regulations. As a CompetentRoofer firm we self-certify the work, and your compliance certificate arrives by post. Keep it: you will need it when you sell.

Inside the National Park.

Like-for-like repairs rarely need permission. Changing a roof covering usually does, and the Park expects local slate on prominent roofs. We tell you which applies before you pay for anything, and we handle the conversation with the planning officer.

Storm damage and insurance.

We make it safe, photograph everything with dates, and send an itemised report in the form insurers ask for. You forward one email instead of chasing three people.

Who will be on your roof

Questions

The questions we get asked at the bottom of the ladder.

Anything else, ring Ellie in the office on 01632 960 735.

Do I need planning permission to re-roof inside the National Park?

Usually not, if it is like for like: the same slate and the same look. Changing the material almost always does, and on prominent roofs the Park expects local Westmorland or Burlington slate rather than imported. Listed buildings and conservation areas need consent either way. We tell you which applies at the survey, and we speak to the planning officer for you.

Will you deal with my insurer after storm damage?

Yes. We make the roof safe first, then send you a written report with dated drone photographs and an itemised quote in the form insurers ask for. Most of our storm jobs go through home insurance without a fuss.

How long does a re-roof take?

A terraced or semi-detached house in natural slate is usually two to three weeks once the scaffold is up, longer for a big stone farmhouse. The quote gives you a start date and a finish date.

Is natural slate worth it over concrete tiles?

On a Lakeland house, almost always. Slate lasts a hundred years or more against forty to sixty for concrete, it is lighter on old timbers, and it is what the house was built for. Concrete tiles are cheaper and perfectly good on a modern house outside the Park.

Can you reuse my old slates?

Every sound slate is sorted and reused, usually 60 to 80 per cent of an older roof. The shortfall comes from our reclaimed stock, so the roof still looks like itself when we leave.

What happens if it rains while my roof is open?

We only strip what we can make watertight the same day, and the roof is sheeted and battened down every night. After thirty-odd years we have learned to read a Kendal sky.

Is the scaffold really included in the price?

Yes. Every quote includes access, whether that is scaffold, a tower or a roof ladder, whichever the job needs. It will never appear as an extra afterwards.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. Quotes are free and written down. The £95 drone report is optional, and it comes off the bill if we do the work.
